Dubai has more hotel rooms than almost any city of its size, across every price point, and the rate you are quoted is frequently not the rate you pay.
The decision that matters
Old city, Downtown or beach? They are twenty to forty-five minutes apart and they are different holidays.
Deira and Bur Dubai are cheapest and most interesting, on the metro, with the souks and the Creek. No beach.
Downtown puts the Burj Khalifa and the mall on the doorstep and costs accordingly. Business Bay next door is cheaper for the same access and is the value pick.
Marina and JBR are the beach-and-restaurants option, with a tram and metro and a genuinely walkable strip.
Palm Jumeirah is resorts, and you will taxi everywhere.
The full comparison is in where to stay in Dubai.
The fees
Quoted rates commonly exclude a tourism dirham fee per room per night, a municipality fee around 7 per cent, a service charge around 10 per cent and VAT at 5 per cent. That can add a quarter to the headline.
Different booking platforms display these differently, so compare final totals rather than nightly rates.
Before booking
Beach access. “Beach hotel” ranges from sand outside the door to a shuttle to a shared club with a day fee. Check the map, not the description — this is the most common Dubai booking disappointment.
Metro access matters more than map distance, because walking between districts is not realistic for much of the year.
Construction. Something is always being built. Recent reviews are the only reliable guide.
A licensed bar on site is worth having if you want a drink without going out.
Short-term lets are licensed by the DTCM; legitimate listings carry a permit number.
When it costs most
December and January are the peak, especially New Year. November to March is high season generally.
June to September hotel rates collapse — often to a quarter of winter prices. The trade-off is 45°C and an indoor holiday.
