A free public beach with showers, a running track, a view of the Burj Al Arab and none of the resort pricing.

A long stretch of white sand off Jumeirah Beach Road, named for the kitesurfing that dominates one end of it, and the best-equipped free public beach in Dubai.

The Burj Al Arab stands directly offshore to the south, which makes this the place most photographs of that building are actually taken from.

Facilities

Unusually good for a free beach: showers, toilets, changing rooms, sun loungers for hire, a children’s play area, volleyball and football courts, and a long line of food trucks and cafés behind the sand. There is free wifi along the beach.

The running track runs 14 kilometres along the coast from here, rubberised and lit at night, and is heavily used from about six in the evening onwards through the cooler months.

Watersports

Kitesurfing at the designated end, with schools operating on the beach. Also paddleboarding, kayaking and wakeboarding through the operators along the strip.

Swimming is generally good, and lifeguards are on duty during posted hours. Pay attention to the flag system — red means do not enter, and it is enforced.

Etiquette

Dubai’s public beaches are used by everyone, and swimwear is normal and unremarkable on them. What is not acceptable is wearing swimwear away from the beach — walking into a shop or a mall in a bikini will get you stopped, and it is a genuine offence rather than a frown.

Topless sunbathing is prohibited. Public displays of affection are best kept minimal.

During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is restricted, and this applies on the beach as much as anywhere.

Nearby beaches

Umm Suqeim Beach, immediately south, is quieter and closer to the Burj Al Arab.

La Mer and JBR’s The Beach are developed strips with restaurants and shops attached, and are also free to access.

Al Mamzar Beach Park in the north has a small entrance charge and is the best for families, with lawns and calm lagoons.

Nikki Beach and the resort beaches charge day rates.

When

Between November and March this is genuinely lovely. From June to September the sea reaches around 35°C and swimming in it is closer to a bath than a swim, and the sand is unwalkable barefoot in the afternoon.
