An industrial district of warehouses and cement works that quietly became where Dubai keeps its art.

Al Quoz sits between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, and it was zoned as industrial: cement plants, marble yards, car workshops, furniture warehouses and the labour accommodation attached to them.

That combination — cheap space, high ceilings, central location — did what it does everywhere, and from about 2007 the warehouses began filling with galleries, studios, roasteries and small manufacturers.

It has not been prettified. The gallery district is still surrounded by working industry, the roads are wide and dusty, and there are no pavements to speak of. That contrast is much of its appeal.

Alserkal Avenue

The core of it. Around forty converted warehouse units holding the Gulf’s most serious commercial galleries, Concrete by OMA, and Cinema Akil, the region’s only arthouse cinema. Free to enter. See its own entry.

The rest of the district

Coffee roasters — Al Quoz is where most of Dubai’s specialty coffee is roasted, and several roasteries have cafés attached.

Warehouse gyms, climbing walls, jiu-jitsu, boxing and a padel scene, which is enormous in Dubai.

Furniture and design showrooms, particularly along the 4th and 6th interchanges.

The Courtyard, an older converted complex predating Alserkal, with studios and a theatre.

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is not in Al Quoz but is not far — a protected wetland at the head of the Creek with three hides, free, where several thousand greater flamingos winter. It is one of the few places in the world where flamingos feed against a skyline of towers, and it closes in the early afternoon.

Getting there

There is no metro station in the district itself. Noor Bank and Equiti on the Red Line are the nearest and both need a taxi for the last ten minutes.

Walking around Al Quoz is not realistic — the blocks are large, the roads are fast, and there is little shade. Taxi between destinations, or use an app.

Hours

The single most important thing. Galleries generally open around midday and close by seven; Sunday is the common closing day; several shut for July and August entirely.

Check individual opening times before making the trip out.
